Empowering Medical Educators: Library Services’ Role in Advancing AI Literacy

Introduction

From medical research and education to clinical decision-making, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing healthcare. The adoption of AI-based tools in healthcare settings has increased, which brings up both practical and ethical issues such as bias and justice in delivering health services. Knowing the pros and cons of these tools, healthcare professionals require basic knowledge of AI, social and ethical considerations, practice-based learning, and improvement regarding AI-based tools to practice effectively (1). Foundational AI literacy enables healthcare professionals to maximize the potentials of AI in teaching and learning programs and clinical settings while understanding the limita- tions of AI. Since OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT in November 2022, support AI literacy, critical evaluation of AI tools and the ethical and effective use of Gen AI (generative artificial intelligence) in medical education presented both challenges and opportunities for health sciences librarians in higher education institutes.

The academics department of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), Canada’s only accredited naturopathic medical college with campuses in Ontario and BC (British Columbia), addressed these chal- lenges through a Professional Development (PD) Day focused on AI literacy. The event featured a plenary session on the role of Gen AI in medical education, followed by a hands-on library workshop where faculty engaged directly with AI tools. By describing the challenges, successes, and practical strategies on PD Day, the author explores health science librarians’ innovative role in bridging the AI literacy gap in healthcare education.
