CCNM Mourns the Passing of Robert Schad (1928-2024)
CCNM is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Robert Schad, a distinguished Canadian business magnate, passionate conservationist, and tireless advocate for naturopathic medicine and the principles of healthy living.
Robert’s contributions to CCNM and the advancement of the naturopathic profession in Canada are immeasurable. His interest in preventative health care began as a young boy in Karlsruhe, Germany, under the influence of his mother, a medical doctor with an interest in holistic therapies. In the mid-1980s, when CCNM was still establishing its foundation and shaping its future, Robert graciously stepped in to provide significant support. His efforts to revitalize the College through strategic guidance, shrewd leadership, and selfless monetary backing provided a firm structure and inaugurated a period of accelerated growth that continues to this day.
“We are indebted to Robert Schad and his efforts to champion naturopathic medical education and clinical care,” says Dr. Rahim Karim, President & CEO, CCNM. “Robert’s steady and impactful direction helped position the College for success and ensured its long-term stability. He understood that wellness and sustainability are interconnected concepts and led CCNM with that vision. In addition to being a stalwart supporter of CCNM and the profession, Robert will be remembered by the naturopathic community as an inspiration, a trailblazer, and a beloved friend.”
Robert’s lasting influence extends into the present. The Schad Clinic at the CCNM – Toronto Campus, founded in September 1999, is the largest naturopathic teaching clinic in Canada and serves as a testament to Robert’s legacy. Scholarships bearing Robert Schad’s name are awarded to high-performing, academically minded students who demonstrate similar leadership qualities as well as an innovative spirit.
Robert believed strongly in individualized, whole-person medicine as a way to address disease and preserve health. He valued integrity and hard work, and believed that social responsibility is fundamental, as is a lifelong curiosity of the natural world.
CCNM remains committed to upholding Robert Schad’s enduring legacy. He will be missed.
